Manuas - Amazon- Brazil

At one time Manaus was the largest city in South America and it could only be reached by boat or plane. It was founded in 1660 when the Portuguese established a fort on the Amazon river to monitor the movement of other foreign powers using the river. In 1890 when the value of rubber was recongized, it became one of the world's weathiest cities. It is said that the great rubber barrons lit their cigars with $100 bills at that time. A great Opera house was built in the middle of this jungle and the great Amazon river for their enjoyment. This Opera house still stands today and is truly beautiful.
