We returned to Santarem with enough time to walk around the city. A taxi from the port to the city center was $5. John checks out the fruit.

Santarem has 265,000 people today and is the third largest city on the Amazon. It was founded in 1661 and is said to have the flavor of a classic Amazon river town, much quieter and less congested than Belem or Manaus.
